How many of you love hummus? It's a staple at our house. But, how many of you have seen it in a glass container at your local food store? It's ALWAYS in plastic, worse yet with a totally non-usable, non-recyclable, plastic protective film across the underside of the lid...UGH. Hummus, like many other items we purchase at the food store can easily be (and usually better) made at home. As most of you know the basic hummus recipe is simple, 5 or so ingredients. By making it at home you know EXACTLY what is being added (or left out...like icky canola oil) & as a bonus you control the flavor enhancers. In this recipe, we added cilantro, avocado & jalapeño.

So, next time, skip the food store option and opt to make at home. Bon Appétit!

Ingredients

1 can garbanzo beans (aka chickpeas)

2 tbsp tahini

Juice of 1 lime (more if you like)

Salt & pepper to taste

Aquafaba (chickpea juice, from the can)

*** add ins***

1 avocado 🥑

1/2 jalapeño (seeds too, we like it spicy) 🌶

1/2 a bunch of cilantro

Don't limit yourself! Add in all sorts of fun flavor enhancers...(my husband's go to add ins are mama Lil's peppers)

Instructions

1. Get out your food processor...if you don't have one, a good ol' blender will do the trick.

2. Drain & rinse your chickpeas BUT SAVE THE WATER the peas are in (aka the aquafaba).

3. Dump your chick peas in your processor and pulse.

4. Add in the tahini & the juice from your lime (you can sub lemons if thats more your flavor jam). The mixture will be clumpy & thick. Here's where the pea water comes in handy...drizzle this in slowly to thin things out, monitoring the consistency.

5. When smooth, add salt & pepper to taste. To make it smoother, add more aquafaba.

6. At this point, throw in your add ins and process. If you want chunkier hummus, feel free to leave out the last processing step. This is another advantage of making it at home...it truly is exactly how you like it!

7. Cut up some veggies, grab some chips, and enjoy what you made while knowing you made the planet a little greener.

PS: did you know you can keep using those juiced limes (& lemons) for other zero-waste household products? Well, ya can! DIY coming soon...
